Best Pinot Noir Wineries in Sonoma: From Littorai to Kosta Browne
A curated guide to Sonoma's best Pinot Noir producers, from delicate Burgundian-style Littorai to opulent, cult-favorite Kosta Browne.
This post is long overdue. How can anyone talk about Sonoma without diving into Pinot Noir? But also—how could I possibly narrow down the list to something manageable? After much restraint (and maybe a little Pinot), I’ve landed on 10 wineries that are top of mind right now. Rest assured, there are many more beautiful Pinots in Sonoma, but consider this a worthy starting point.
Somewhat embarrassingly, I use the word “cult” seven times here (well, now eight). But honestly, that just underscores how iconic these producers are. Still, I’ve tried to mix things up: you’ll find the heavy hitters alongside more under‑the‑radar gems, and a spectrum of styles and prices.
This is not a definitive “best of” list. Think of it more as a curated snapshot—a map of where my palate is wandering lately. Listed here, in rough order of Pinot style— from the most delicate and Burgundian to the most classic California:
Littorai, Ceritas, Auteur, Radio‑Coteau, DuMOL, Williams Selyem, Cirq, Wren Hop, Kosta Browne
Kosta Browne and Williams Selyem are the largest producers I’ve written about on Noteworthy at around 30,000 cases produced annually (the best information I could find). I prefer to focus on smaller producers that are still run by the winemakers they are named after —but skipping them would feel like pretending Napa doesn’t make Cabernet. Their iconic status earns them a rightful place here.
These are the heavy hitters of Sonoma, if you’re curious for some under the radar gems, check them out in my post on Sonoma’s hidden gem Pinots.

Littorai - Burgundian style, terroir‑driven
If you’re someone who enjoys going to Michelin-starred restaurants, odds are you’ve seen Littorai on the menu. Founded by renowned winemaker Ted Lemon, whose Burgundian expertise shapes every bottle, Littorai hardly needs an introduction in Pinot circles. The focus here is on elegant, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley, crafted with a non-interventionist, regenerative, and biodynamic approach that lets the vineyards do the talking. The wines are consistently outstanding—refined, balanced, and deeply expressive of place.
Tasting Experience
The tasting experience is understated but memorable: a simple space beside the working winery, elevated by thoughtful hospitality and genuine, in-depth conversation. It’s a visit that resonates with anyone who values sustainable farming and age-worthy, nuanced wines. And since Littorai is hard to find outside the estate, tasting here feels less like an appointment and more like a privilege.

Ceritas - Pure, elegant, cool‑climate
Ceritas embodies the cutting edge of California’s terroir movement. With organic farming and minimalist methods, Ceritas produces wines of startling clarity and longevity that have earned cult status among sommeliers. John Raytek crafts Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that rival the finesse of Burgundy – lean, mineral, and laser-focused on vineyard character from unique vineyards few others have access to.
And while Ceritas is best known for Chardonnay and Pinot, don't sleep on the Cabernet Sauvignon—it’s unexpected and quietly stunning.
Tasting Experience
Tasting here is like sitting in on a master class in terroir, featuring multiple single-vineyard expressions, each a revelation of soil and climate differences. Tastings are in their working winery in downtown Healdsburg. It’s not fancy, it’s focused, it’s educational.

Auteur – Delicate, elegant, cool‑climate
Auteur Wines is a boutique, family-run winery in the Russian River Valley, best known for its small-lot, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Founded by Kenneth and Laura Juhasz, Auteur has spent the last 20 years quietly (and somewhat smugly) building a cult following for wines that are equal parts elegant and expressive. Think crisp, balanced Chardonnays and nuanced, Burgundian-style Pinots that politely sidestep the heavy-handed oak and sky-high alcohol that sometimes gatecrash California wine.
Tasting Experience
Auteur’s new Russian River hilltop estate tasting room is, frankly, stunning—panoramic views, relaxed energy, and believe it or not, kids and dogs are welcome (plus an option to have wines by the glass). It’s a gorgeous estate that I also highly recommend for rainy days and stunning views. Tastings are thoughtfully paired with artisan cheeses and fresh bread, a nod to Laura’s cheesemaking background, and the whole thing manages to be both memorable and unpretentious. The downtown Sonoma tasting salon offers an equally elegant but more quietly glamorous experience.
Other Essentials
Radio-Coteau - Balanced, savory, restrained
Radio-Coteau has long held its “cult” status for good reason: meticulous, handcrafted wines that hum with vibrancy and balance. Eric Sussman turns out Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel that capture Sonoma’s fog-cooled ridges in a bottle—perfumed, energetic, and unmistakably site-driven.
What sets this Sebastopol-based winery apart is its devotion to biodynamic farming and the revival of a historic estate, complete with old-vine Zinfandel and a fully regenerative approach to the land. The results are wines that marry California purity with Old World finesse: elegant, layered Pinots; restrained, mineral-driven Chardonnays; and savory, Northern Rhône‑inspired Syrahs—all made with a gentle, minimal-intervention hand.
Tasting Experience
Tastings take place right in the Sebastopol production facility. It’s not a formal tasting room, but it’s intimate, a little geeky, and feels more like being let in on a secret than going through the motions of a tourist tasting room. It can be difficult to get a reservation, but worth it if you’re a true Pinot geek!

DuMOL – From coastal elegance to RRV richness
Spanning coastal bottlings that are elegant and mineral-driven to Russian River Valley wines that lean rich, dark-fruited, and textural, DuMOL shows off the full spectrum of Sonoma Pinot. Under longtime winemaker and partner Andy Smith (who, fun fact, cut his teeth working at Oddbins in the UK —the quirky wine shop where I used to shop, too), the winery has kept a deliberately low profile while turning out some of the region’s most consistently sought-after wines.
Known for its meticulous, vineyard-driven approach, DuMOL has earned a loyal following among Pinot Noir and Chardonnay lovers. The wines are all about balance and site expression—vibrant, layered Chardonnays, medium-bodied Pinots with both richness and elegance, plus the occasional curveball like Syrah, Cabernet, and even Mencía if you’re lucky enough to catch it.
Tasting Experience
Visiting DuMOL is by appointment only, offering a rare peek into a winery that was closed to the public for years. Tastings take place at their working winery in Windsor, either in the cellar or a dedicated tasting room, often with the hum of production in the background. The experience is intimate and educational, with a knowledgeable host guiding you through current releases in a way that feels both insider and unpretentious.
Other Essentials
Williams Selyem – Lush, full-bodied, fruit-forward
Williams Selyem is a true icon for California Pinot Noir lovers, credited with putting the Russian River Valley on the global wine map. Their wines are celebrated for balance and complexity—California fruit wrapped in a Burgundian cloak of finesse—and they even earned North America’s first-ever 100-point Pinot Noir. By Noteworthy standards, Williams Selyem counts as a “large” producer (~30,000 cases annually), but Pinot Noir is the star, with some vintages boasting 30+ single-vineyard expressions alongside regional blends. That breadth makes it tricky to pigeonhole their style: some bottlings lean delicate and nuanced, while others are unapologetically lush.
Tasting Experience
Notoriously exclusive, tastings are reserved for allocation list members—though it’s worth joining the waitlist and politely inquiring for a shot at visiting. Those who make it in are treated to an intimate experience, all set in a sleek, airy salon overlooking estate vineyards and the Russian River Valley. Expect stunning views, an unhurried pace, and the sense of being welcomed into the culture of Pinot.

Cirq - Opulent, lush, full‑bodied
Michael Browne’s two decades of experience and success culminate in CIRQ wines (and a more affordable sister brand CHEV, also here). CIRQ is essentially the cult Pinot of the Browne Family portfolio. If you’re familiar with the famed Kosta Browne style, you can expect CIRQ to be in a similar vein of sumptuous Pinot Noir, honed even further by Browne’s personal refinements. Pinots that are rich and silky, balanced and exquisite.
Tasting Experience
The Browne Family estate is the newly built “home” for their wines, stunning, worthy of the wine itself. Reservations (or rather, “requests”) are hard to come by, so make sure to reach out in advance.

Wren hop - Powerful, opulent, modern.
Dijon Pinot clones but with a bigger, bolder, unapologetically Californian personality (and Chards with oak, but in a good way). Wren Hop is where bold Pinot meets bold design—a boutique, family-run estate that somehow manages to take the wine very seriously without taking itself too seriously, infusing bits of humor wherever they can.
Tasting Experience
Tastings are by appointment only at their Russian River estate, often hosted by a family member and occasionally crashed by their Golden Retriever, Vinnie. Expect local cheese, great stories, and a relaxed setting where you can geek out on wine and ask stupid questions without judgement.

Kosta Browne - Intense, ripe, oak‑influenced (though more restrained in recent vintages)
Kosta Browne helped define the modern, luxurious “California Pinot” style—rich, velvety reds that built an empire of buzz, top scores, and endless waitlists. Founded in 1997 by Dan Kosta (now of Convene) and Michael Browne (now of Cirq, above), the winery catapulted into cult fame when the 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir was crowned Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator in 2011. Over the last two decades, Kosta Browne has become synonymous with luxury Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and today sits under the Duckhorn Wine Company umbrella.
Expect bold, fruit-driven Pinots and layered Chardonnays with plush textures and impressive depth, the kind of wines that practically purr in the glass (though wines are becoming more restrained in more recent vintages). And every so often, Kosta Browne surprises with projects that lean more experimental—even making some wines in Burgundy itself.
Tasting Experience
Tastings are at a contemporary winery and hospitality space located in The Barlow, a trendy mixed-use marketplace in Sebastopol. A variety of options are all strictly by appointment and designed to feel like an immersion into the brand’s polished world of luxury Pinot.
