Hidden Gem Pinot Noir Wineries in Sonoma: LaRue, Dot Wines, Black Kite & More
LaRue, Dot Wines, Domaine De La Riviere, Black Kite Cellars, Schermeister Winery
It appears people like Pinot. Luckily for all of us, Sonoma practically runs on the stuff. A few weeks ago we covered some of the Sonoma’s heavy hitters — the icons, the “yes, those” Pinots. So today, we’re taking a different tack: still stunning Pinot Noir, but from producers who aren’t yet on everyone’s radar. Think “wow, this is gorgeous” without “guess I’ll be eating instant ramen for the next two weeks.” Or perhaps you, too, are an introvert quietly dodging the holiday chaos? Ok, ready? Let’s go.
These wineries skew smaller, quieter, and still run by the winemakers who started them. They’re family-owned, deeply personal, and genuinely special. And fair warning: two of them are helmed by newly minted, award-winning winemakers… which means they may not stay “under the radar” for long. Consider this your early-access pass.
Listed roughly from most delicate to richest Pinots: LaRue, Dot Wines, Domaine De La Riviere, Black Kite Cellars, Schermeister Winery.

LaRue
Katy Wilson was just named Winemaker of the Year by VinePair, so let’s be honest, this “hidden gem” status may have an expiration date. LaRue is tiny, fiercely personal, and entirely run by Katy herself (who, by the way, also makes wine for Reeve, Bloodroot, Anaba, and Smith Story… so yes, you might have already had her wine). Her focus is ultra-boutique, cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, crafted with a Burgundian wink and a California backbone. Expect elegance and restraint: delicate, site-driven wines with bright coastal acidity, subtle oak, and a transparency that lets the Sonoma Coast do most of the talking. With husband David, a veteran sommelier, in the mix, the two bring a thoughtful, almost symbiotic perspective to every tiny lot they produce.
Tasting Experience
LaRue’s new farmhouse tasting room is just about an hour from San Francisco — close enough for a spontaneous “we deserve something nice” escape. Tastings are intimate and by appointment only, offered in a relaxed, sit-down format with a curated lineup, including their single-vineyard Pinots and Sonoma Coast blend. You can also add a Sonoma cheese plate, which feels like the correct life choice. It’s a warm, personal, no-rush introduction to LaRue’s beautifully made, quietly confident wines.

Dot Winery
Founded by viticulturist Lise Asimont, another award winning winemaker, Dot Wines is one of those rare finds that manages to be both deeply technical and effortlessly cool. Asimont’s background in vineyard management (and her Filipino-American roots) bring a fresh, thoughtful lens to Sonoma winemaking. Her focus is on small-lot, vineyard-driven wines. Expect elegant, Burgundian-inspired Pinot Noirs, delicate but with Côte de Nuits muscle, alongside bright, expressive Grenache and the occasional carbonic Zinfandel that’s pure, juicy joy in a glass.
Tasting Experience
Dot Wines pours out of Bacchus Landing, Healdsburg’s lively wine-collective-meets-lifestyle-hub, where olive trees shade the courtyard and bocce balls clack in the background. The tasting room itself feels sleek yet relaxed, part modern bar, part neighborhood hangout, and tastings are often hosted by Lise herself or her husband, making it all feel refreshingly personal. You can opt to elevate the experience with chef-curated, seasonal pairings (highly recommended). And since nearly every winery at Bacchus Landing is worth a detour, you might as well clear your afternoon — and bring the dog and the kid, too.

Domaine de la Riviere
After years of growing premium fruit for some of the most coveted Pinot programs in Sonoma, the Bedrosians decided it was time to put their own name on the bottle. Enter Domaine de la Rivière, launched in 2017 with veteran winemaker Kale Anderson at the helm (formerly of Pahlmeyer and responsible for a 100-point Cabernet back in 2013). Their first vintage dropped only in 2020, making this still very much a “new-ish kid with serious credentials.” The name translates to “Estate on the River,” nodding both to their Burgundian inspirations and their actual perch along the Russian River. With heritage clones being replanted and the family personally farming the vines, this is as intimate and hands-on as boutique winemaking gets. Expect Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made with classical balance, clarity, and a very site-first mentality.
Tasting Experience
You’ll taste either at Grand Cru Custom Crush or, if the timing works, at the family’s own vineyard nearby (do the vineyard!) both offer the kind of warm, personal welcome that makes you forget you’re not technically part of the Bedrosian family. Marla or Geoff typically host themselves, sharing stories of how their fruit once fed iconic producers, and pouring refined, silky Pinots layered with raspberry, rose, and river-bend freshness. The Chardonnays are equally polished: beautifully balanced, gently barrel-kissed, and unmistakably Russian River.

Square Peg Winery
Tucked into the cool, fog-kissed hills of Green Valley near Sebastopol, Square Peg is a small, family-run winery doing things the hard—and rewarding—way: 100% dry-farming their Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. The result? Wines with real depth, structure, and soul. Under the hand of veteran winemaker Bill Knuttel, the style leans Burgundian—elegant, medium-bodied Pinots with bright red fruit and earthy undertones, and a Zinfandel that proves the grape can be concentrated and serious yet beautifully balanced, (and not jammy).
Tasting Experience
The tasting room doubles as an art gallery, so you can sip wine and debate the parallels between the art and the wine worlds (a personal favorite topic of mine). Tastings are private and hosted by the owners or family members themselves. On sunny days, you can take your glass outside to the edge of the vines and soak in the view from their ridge-top perch—a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path kind of beauty that feels worlds away from the main tasting trail.

Black Kite Cellars
Black Kite Cellars has been quietly impressing Pinot lovers since 2003, crafting limited-production Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some of the coolest (literally and figuratively) corners of Anderson Valley and the West Sonoma Coast. The name comes from the Black-shouldered Kite hawks that glide above their estate vineyard — their striking red eyes even make an appearance on the label, a nice bit of avian brand synergy. This is still very much a family affair, producing sumptuous, single-vineyard Pinots and Chardonnays that balance California generosity with coastal finesse. And with winemaker Jeff Gaffner in the mix, there’s a polished, quietly confident touch to the wines that makes them feel both luxurious and grounded.
Tasting Experience
In 2023, the family unveiled Jasper House, their ultra-cozy tasting cabin, and the only tasting room in tiny Freestone, tucked into a redwood-scented hillside. The setting is intimate and intentionally off the beaten path, which keeps things peaceful even on busy weekends (and the fireplace makes it extra cozy). With limited production and a relaxed, personal vibe, it’s the kind of tasting that feels like discovering a secret Pinot hideaway. (This is also one of our recs for cozy tastings with fireplaces!)

Schermeister
Schermeister is easily the boldest pick of this lineup, and the only one venturing beyond Pinot, yet still very much worthy of an under-the-radar spotlight. Founded in 2012 by Robert and Laura Schermeister, this nano-boutique Sonoma Valley producer marries strict low-intervention winemaking with a surprisingly plush, hedonistic style. Yes, everything is native-fermented, sustainably farmed, unfined, and unfiltered… but no, these wines are not the cloudy kombucha cousins you might fear. Instead, they’re clean, polished, powerful, and unapologetically expressive.
The wines lean rich and textural: “plush,” “sappy,” and supported by generous new French oak. And thanks to Robert’s biochemistry background, the wines stay remarkably stable and precise — a neat trick in the natural-wine universe. The portfolio spans Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Experience
Set inside Glen Ellen’s historic Jack London Village — the oldest building in the area — Schermeister offers an intimate, personality-driven tasting typically led by Rob or Laura themselves. Beyond the standard flight, you’ll get interactive elements like their Aroma Bar, an 18-vial sensory challenge that’s equal parts educational and humbling.
There’s no food service, but you’re surrounded by great restaurant options in Jack London Village, making it easy to pair your tasting with a pre- or post-flight bite.
