Healdsburg Weekend Itinerary for Pinot Lovers: 5 Must-Visit Wineries
A two-day Sonoma itinerary for Pinot Noir lovers: cool Sonoma Coast pours, terroir-driven Chardonnays, and a relaxed lunch in Russian River Valley.
It would be preposterous to say that in one weekend you could taste all of the best wines near Healdsburg. There are dozens, possibly hundreds if you count every side project and cult Pinot bottling, so consider this the first installment in a series on how to spend a weekend in Healdsburg.
When I go, I aim for a variety of tastings: something high-end, something more approachable, something classic, and, crucially, somewhere you can eat. Too many times we’ve found ourselves housing burritos in the car between tastings (I mean, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I’d rather enjoy that burrito with a view and a glass of wine at a winery that allows picnics). I also try to keep drive times under 20 minutes because if you’re hitting three wineries in a day (which, let’s be honest, is the max unless you have a hollow leg), there’s no time to waste.
A quick note: while a few of these spots are kid- or dog-friendly, most aren’t, so think of this itinerary as your grown-up getaway.
Marine Layer - a cool aperitif
If you arrive in Healdsburg toward the evening, kick things off at Marine Layer, a vibey downtown tasting room open late (by wine country standards) until 7pm.
The name nods to the coastal fog that cools the Sonoma Coast, resulting in longer hang-times and wines with nuanced flavors, bright acidity, and balance. The result? Pinots and Chardonnays that are elegant yet approachable. The occasional Vermentino is also a fun taste.
Tasting Experience:
Their chic, modern tasting room opened in 2021. Think sleek bar, trendy staff, and pairing bites. Come for a tasting or just post up with a glass and people-watch.

Ceritas - start with a Pinot education
Ceritas embodies the cutting edge of California’s terroir movement. (And it’s definitely one of the best Pinots in Sonoma.) With organic farming and minimalist methods, Ceritas produces wines of startling clarity and longevity that have earned cult status among sommeliers. John Raytek crafts Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that rival the finesse of Burgundy: lean, mineral, and laser-focused on vineyard character from unique vineyards few others have access to.
And while Ceritas is best known for Chardonnay and Pinot, don't sleep on the Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s unexpected and quietly stunning.
Tasting Experience:
Tasting here is like sitting in on a master class in terroir, featuring multiple single-vineyard expressions, each a revelation of soil and climate differences. Tastings are in their working winery in downtown Healdsburg. It’s not fancy, it’s focused, it’s educational.
Other Essentials:
Bricoleur Vineyards: Lunch and Wine Tasting in Windsor
Bricoleur isn’t just a winery, it’s a destination (a lifestyle wine brand? Is that a thing?) Think lush gardens, pond views, lawn games, and a paired lunch experience that doesn’t feel like an afterthought.
The wines cover the full spectrum: unoaked Chardonnay, Old Vine Zin, Viognier, Sauv Blanc, and even sparkling rosé. If you’re traveling with a group, picky in-laws, or small children with refined palates, this is your crowd-pleaser. I would rarely recommend something that tries to be so many things at once, but Bricoleur really works hard. We also recommend it as a fantastic kid picnic destination and a fun spot for sparkling wines.
Tasting Experience:
Tasting here is casual, fun, and even family- and dog-friendly. Grab the picnic option or book a more curated tasting-and-lunch combo. There’s something for everyone, and yes, the wines are great, too.

Unwind at Wren Hop in the afternoon in the Russian River Valley
Dijon Pinot clones but with a bigger, bolder, unapologetically Californian personality (and Chards with oak, but in a good way). Wren Hop is where bold Pinot meets bold design, a boutique, family-run estate that somehow manages to take the wine very seriously without taking itself too seriously, infusing bits of humor wherever they can.
Tasting Experience:
Tastings are by appointment only at their Russian River estate, often hosted by a family member and occasionally crashed by their Golden Retriever, Vinnie. Expect local cheese, great stories, and a relaxed setting where you can geek out on wine and ask stupid questions without judgement. A perfect way to end your day of tastings.

CIRQ & CHEV: Michael Browne's Russian River Pinot Estate
The next morning, end on an (extremely) high note. This one needs little introduction, Michael Browne’s two decades of experience and success culminate in CIRQ wines (and a more affordable sister brand CHEV, also here). CIRQ is essentially the cult Pinot of the Browne Family portfolio. If you’re familiar with the famed Kosta Browne style, you can expect CIRQ to be in a similar vein of sumptuous Pinot Noir, honed even further by Browne’s personal refinements. Pinots that are rich and silky, balanced and exquisite.
Tasting Experience:
The Browne Family estate is the newly built “home” for their wines, stunning, worthy of the wine itself. Reservations (or rather, “requests”) are hard to come by, so make sure to reach out in advance.
