Where to picnic in Sonoma
For those who, like me, sometimes get hangry, even while tasting amazing wines.
If you’ve tasted your way through Sonoma before, you’ve probably noticed that food is scarce. Sure, you might be treated to the occasional nibble of cheese or a lone cracker—if you're lucky—but don’t count on it. Between local regulations that make food service tricky (actually, nearly impossible) and lean winery teams focused on pouring rather than plating, snacks are usually a bring-your-own-eat-in-the-car affair.
The good news? Quite a few wineries welcome picnickers, and some offer downright dreamy spots to uncork a bottle and unpack your provisions. So here are a few standout places where you can settle in with your home-packed spread (or that perfect ham and butter sando from Troubadour in Healdsburg) and sip in style.
(N.B. some require a reservation, some pre-payment, some cater their own picnics, so please double check with the winery before showing up starving!)
Porter Creek - picnic with a Burgundian-style Pinot
Porter Creek Vineyards is a quiet powerhouse of artisanal winemaking, where Burgundy-trained Alex Davis crafts elegant, site-driven wines with a minimalist, biodynamic approach. The wines are beautifully restrained—lower in alcohol, silken in texture, and a welcome departure from big California Pinots. Each bottle speaks clearly of its Russian River Valley hillside roots, offering a real sense of place with every pour.
Tasting Experience
The tasting experience is refreshingly rustic: a quaint barn set among biodynamic vineyards and working farmland. For something more immersive, join Alex himself for a 4x4 vineyard tour, bumping along steep slopes while talking soil, clones, and minimal intervention winemaking. For $25 extra, you can opt to have your tasting at the outdoor picnic tables, where you can also enjoy your own picnic.

Limerick Lane Cellars - picnic with a side of a Zinfandel exploration
Specializing in old-vine Zinfandel and Rhône varietals, Limerick defies regional norms. Their Zins—especially the storied 1910 Block—are a love letter to California’s wine history, proving once and for all that Zin doesn't have to mean jammy chaos. With a minimalist winemaking philosophy—"hands off, eyes on"—they let the vineyard do the talking. Expect spice, dark fruit, and earthiness. The Rhones are seriously good, too. The younger ones are more fruit forward than their French counterparts, but if you get a chance to try an aged one, they have a complexity to rival any Northern Rhone Syrah.
Tasting Experience
Scenic, relaxed vineyard setting, either in a quaint tasting room or outdoors on picnic tables among the actual century-old vines. It’s scenic, it’s unfussy and most importantly it’s fun. You can do the standard tasting, or do a tasting with a curated picnic basket full of local goodies.
Notable Varietals
🥂White: Grenache Blanc, Viognier. Plus a delicious Provence style rose.
🍷 Red: multiple Zinfandels (including field blends) and Rhone varietals: Syrah, Grenache and their blends.

Preston Farm & Winery - picnic with a side of homemade bread and olive oil
Preston is a vibrant, 125-acre organic and biodynamic farm in Dry Creek Valley—complete with vineyards, olive trees, orchards, grain fields, and livestock. The wines are guided by a minimal-intervention, old-world ethos with a Rhône influence, showcasing blends like the L. Preston red (Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsaut) and the Madam Preston white (Roussanne, Viognier, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc). With 13 varietals grown on site, there's truly something for every palate. Tastings here lean rustic and relaxed: think sipping small-batch Rhône- and Italian-style wines under a walnut tree, with house-baked bread, olive oil, and maybe a chicken or two wandering by.
Tasting Experience
The experience is a true taste of country life, where the vibe is unpretentious, the wines are food-friendly, and the grounds invite lingering. Guests are encouraged to picnic, play bocce, and explore the farm store stocked with housemade sourdough, estate olive oil, pickled vegetables, and more. If you’re lucky enough to visit on a Sunday, don’t miss their old-school “Jim’s jug” wine, a Zinfandel-blend 3 liter growler straight from the cellar, available only on Sundays.
Notable Varietals
🥂 White: Vermentino, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne
🍷 Red: Zinfandel, Carignan, Barbera, Nero d'Avola, Syrah, Mourvedre, Petite Syrah, Grenache

Furthermore - picnic with a side of live music
Furthermore’s mission is to explore how Pinot Noir expresses itself across California’s coastal regions—and they deliver on that promise with an impressive lineup of vineyard designates, from Sonoma Coast to Santa Lucia Highlands to Sta. Rita Hills. Since 2019, the wines have been crafted by Ross Cobb (of Williams Selyem and Cobb Wines fame), whose deft touch brings out the elegance, balance, and site-specific nuance in every bottle. Expect medium-bodied Pinots with bright fruit, balanced acidity, and those silky tannins that make you reach for another glass.
Tasting Experience
The Sebastopol tasting room, set beneath towering sequoias in the vineyard, offers a laid-back, family- and dog-friendly vibe with a side of live music and bocce. It’s the perfect place to unpack your picnic and spend a leisurely afternoon (check out the Sunday line up). If you're in the mood for something a little more urban and evening-forward, the Healdsburg lounge delivers events and tastings in a sleek, contemporary space.

Bricoleur - a catered picnic
Bricoleur isn’t just a winery— it’s a destination (a lifestyle wine brand? Is that a thing?) Think lush gardens, pond views, lawn games, and a paired lunch experience that doesn’t feel like an afterthought.
The wines cover the full spectrum—unoaked Chardonnay, Old Vine Zin, Viognier, Sauv Blanc, and even sparkling rosé. If you’re traveling with a group, picky in-laws, or small children with refined palates, this is your crowd-pleaser. I would rarely recommend something that tries to be so many things at once, but Bricoleur really works hard.
Tasting Experience
Tasting here is casual, fun, and even family- and dog-friendly. Grab the picnic option (they will pack the picnic for you) or book a more curated tasting-and-lunch combo. There’s something for everyone—and yes, the wines are great, too
Notable Varietals
🥂White: Chardonnay (including unoaked and vineyard-specific bottlings) Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and occasional blends.
🍷Red: Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Sirah, Grenache and blends
