Best Sauvignon Blanc Wineries in Sonoma County
Exceptional Sauvignon Blancs in Sonoma
I’m not on TikTok—20 minutes on Instagram a day already tests the limits of my screen time sanity—so you can imagine my surprise (okay, mild horror) when I stumbled upon the latest trend: frozen jalapeños dunked into Sauvignon Blanc.
Look, I get it. Not everyone treats wine like the sacred art form it is. I myself sipped Tinto de Verano with joy and abandon in my 20s (despite what the New York Times might urge you to do, it’s just cheap red wine and Sprite). But still—jalapeños?
If you, like me, appreciate an actual good Sauvignon Blanc, and are wondering where to explore the best of what Sonoma has to offer, I have a few gems for you. What makes it fun—and tricky—is that California SBs cover the full style spectrum: from Loire-like citrusy, lean and mineral expressions, to grassy, gooseberry-forward bottles in the New Zealand camp, to rich, luxurious, Bordeaux-inspired versions with a touch of oak and lees, and the occasional beeswax note to round it all out.
Let’s dive in.
Trione - fresh and tropical, brilliantly executed SB

The Trione family has been farming premium grapes in Sonoma for over 45 years, farming about 600 acres across Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, and the Sonoma Coast. Their own label uses the best 3% of the fruit across their vineyards, which is why their lineup spans everything from Pinot to Cab to Primitivo (Italy’s Zinfandel cousin). The wines showcase classic California fruit character, with great balance and food friendliness.
Their Sauvignon Blanc is also classic California— fresh, with tropical notes —akin to New Zealand, but the Trione Sauv Blanc has more polish, more character, more sophistication. Made in stainless steel and aged on lees, it shows off pineapple, passion fruit, and guava in all their glory. It’s bright, zesty, and seriously well-crafted.
Tasting Experience:
Set in scenic Alexander Valley, the tasting room offers vineyard views, a historic house, and bocce courts to boot. It’s laid-back, elegantly rustic, and family-friendly. (Though the event-ready vibe makes it feel just a smidge commercial).
Notable Varietals:
🍷 Red: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Primitivo, Syrah
🥂White: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay

Rochioli - Classically fresh SB, with unexpected length and complexity
Rochioli is the kind of name that makes wine lovers sit up a little straighter. With over 80 years on the same storied property—including some of the oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines in Sonoma—it’s a pillar of California winemaking. In 1985, their very first estate Pinot Noir was named “Best Pinot Noir in America” by Wine Spectator. Tom Rochioli’s decision to isolate individual vineyard blocks and treat them with minimal intervention was visionary at the time, and it’s paid off in terroir-driven wines that are anything but cookie-cutter. Today, it’s a still a family business.
While best known for Pinot, Rochioli’s Estate Sauvignon Blanc is a sleeper hit. Grown in the Russian River Valley and sourced mostly from vines planted in 1959, it’s fermented in stainless steel tanks and delivers classic SB freshness—bright citrus and flint—with an unexpected depth and a long, graceful finish that hints at its age.
Tasting Experience:
Tastings are by reservation only at their quiet, bucolic estate in the Russian River Valley. You’ll sample their Estate Chardonnay, Pinot Noirs, and Sauvignon Blanc for a mere $25 tasting fee. I’d be remiss not to mention: their single-vineyard wines (the truly cult stuff) are by allocation only, the list is full, and they aren’t included in the tasting—so if that’s your holy grail, you may walk away a touch wistful. Still, the estate lineup more than holds its own, especially at this price point. Bonus: you’re welcome to enjoy a picnic on their outdoor patio.

Hamel - SB reminiscent of a top Sancerre (with a twist)
A unique blend of luxury and soul. This family-owned estate is renowned for its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, producing limited, terroir-focused wines that capture the essence of their rugged hillside vineyards. The winery's dedication to sustainable practices and minimal intervention winemaking results in Cabs (and Rhone-style wines) that truly reflect the volcanic soils and microclimates of the Moon Mountain District.
Hamel’s Sauvignon Blanc drinks more like a top-tier Sancerre than a typical California SB. While it does see some oak, it’s mostly neutral, and the wine is also aged in stainless steel and concrete eggs—bringing out that flinty, mineral backbone. Interestingly, they add a splash of Sémillon (a classic Bordeaux move), but the flavor profile still leans Loire, with bright acidity and that unmistakable stony elegance.
Tasting Experience:
Expect luxury, but not the stuffy kind, set in a sleek modern estate with sweeping vineyard views, with undivided attention. Bonus: an in-house executive chef creates gourmet bite pairings for your wines.
Notable Varietals:
🍷 Red: Cabernet Sauvignon, plus other Bordeaux blending grapes like Cabernet Franc (in the blends). Plus a Grenache in a Rhone-style blend
🥂White: Sauvignon Blanc

Merry Edwards – The Sauvignon Blanc that changed the game
Founded in 1997 by the trailblazing Merry Edwards—one of California’s first female winemakers—the winery quickly became a benchmark for powerful, terroir-driven wines with elegance and staying power. Merry’s Pinots are unapologetically fruit-forward and opulent, yet always refined and age-worthy. Today, winemaker Heidi von der Mehden carries on Merry’s legacy with a steady hand and clear vision.
While the single-vineyard Pinots are the headliners, the Sauvignon Blanc often steals the show. Merry Edwards essentially redefined what California Sauvignon Blanc could be: rich, layered, and complex—but still remarkably fresh. Fermented and aged in barrel (sur lie, no malo), it’s a style that leans more Bordeaux than Loire—minus the Sémillon. Think tropical fruit, citrus blossom, a touch of marzipan, and a long, textured finish. It’s a very California expression—and very Merry Edwards.
Tasting Experience:
Located just outside Sebastopol, the modern estate tasting room is set among vineyards on the Laguna Ridge. The facility includes both the production winery and a welcoming tasting space with private rooms and a patio overlooking Pinot vines. It’s relaxed and welcoming with unfussy hospitality.

🍷 Red: Pinot
🥂White: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay

Aperture - Bordeaux style luxurious Sauvignon Blanc
Aperture brings together world-class Bordeaux-style wines and sleek modern aesthetics in a way that feels more Left Bank-meets-design-museum than your typical Sonoma tasting room. Founded by winemaker Jesse Katz and his father, acclaimed photographer Andy Katz, the winery delivers an experience that’s as much about visual art as it is about polished, expressive wines.
The wines themselves are all about balance—ripe California fruit shaped by Old World structure, natural acidity, and restraint. Jesse Katz keeps intervention to a minimum (no acid correction, no heavy-handed tricks), letting the cool-climate vineyard character speak for itself. The reds, especially the Cabernet-based blends, are powerful yet sculpted, with a depth and finesse that’s earned them serious acclaim.
The Sauvignon Blanc follows suit: barrel-fermented in a Bordeaux style with a splash of Sémillon (though they also produce a 100% SB estate bottling), and like Merry Edwards, Katz skips malolactic fermentation to keep things bright. It’s layered, luxurious, and if you’re feeling flush, there’s even a $100+ bottle to prove just how sophisticated Sauvignon Blanc can be.
Tasting Experience:
The sleek, art-filled lounge offers panoramic vineyard views and striking photography, setting the scene for a sophisticated, highly personalized tasting. If you’re after something fresh, modern, and a little glamorous, Aperture hits the mark.

🍷 Red: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec
