Lush Wines in Sonoma (aka velvety Zins, Mourvedres and Italians)
Aka wineries my mom would love
It was my mom's birthday recently, and after years of trying to decipher her wine preferences, I think I've finally cracked the code: she likes wines that are lush. Lush in that velvety, complex, rich, and fruit-forward kind of way, bold but balanced wines. We’re talking beautifully made Zinfandels (yes, they exist), big-hearted Italians, and sun-soaked French reds from the Rhône. These are wines that flirt with your roast lamb, cozy up to your pizza, and practically dance with anything off the grill. And in Sonoma, they’re still flying under the radar. So pour a glass, preheat that oven, and let’s get into it.

Limerick Cellars - Zin Story Tellers
Specializing in old-vine Zinfandel and Rhône varietals, Limerick defies regional norms. Their Zins—especially the storied 1910 Block—are a love letter to California’s wine history, proving once and for all that Zin doesn't have to mean jammy chaos. With a minimalist winemaking philosophy—"hands off, eyes on"—they let the vineyard do the talking. Expect spice, dark fruit, and earthiness. The Rhones are seriously good, too. The younger ones are more fruit forward than their French counterparts, but if you get a chance to try an aged one, they have a complexity to rival any Northern Rhone Syrah.
Tasting Experience:
Scenic, relaxed vineyard setting, either in a quaint tasting room or outdoors on picnic tables among the actual century-old vines. It’s scenic, it’s unfussy and most importantly it’s fun.
Notable Varietals:
🍷 Red: multiple Zinfandels (including field blends) and Rhone varietals: Syrah, Grenache and their blends.
🥂White: Grenache Blanc, Viognier. Plus a delicious Provence style rose,

Crux Winery - Velvety California Rhones
Brian and Steve are crafting Rhônes and Zins that wear their California heritage on their sleeve. My personal favorites, the GSM and Grenache lean into ripe fruit and herbal nuance—there’s an almost eucalyptus-like note on the Grenache that’s pure California magic. Meanwhile, their Mourvèdres, Zins, and Petite Sirahs are definitely more serious, offering luxurious fruit grounded by bright acidity and restrained alcohol. Here, too, opt to taste one of the older vintages if Brian and Steve offer.
Tasting Experience:
No chandeliers or marble bars here. You’re tasting right in the barrel room, often with Brian or Steve pouring the wines themselves. It’s casual, old-school, and deeply personal.
Notable Varietals:
🍷Red: Rhône classics – Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Mourvèdre and California classic Zinfandel.
🥂White: Grenache Blanc and Viognier plus a dry rosé (a GSM blend).

Unti - The Italian Gem
Unti is a hidden gem that brings a slice of the Mediterranean to Sonoma. This family-run estate (with family roots in Tuscany) farms organically and champions uncommon (for California) Italian grapes like Barbera, Aglianico and Vermentino and Rhone varietals, too. The reds? Vibrant fruit meets earthy depth, spice, and tannins that mean business. It’s soulful, food-loving wine that practically begs for pizza night.
Tasting Experience:
No frills, all charm. The intimate tasting room comes with a $25(!!!) fee (waived with purchase) and a chance to chat with a family member while trying out a Vermentino or an Aglianico. It’s a gem of a visit.
Notable Varietals:
🍷 Red: Sangiovese, Barbera, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, Montepulciano, Petite Sirah, and Aglianico.
🥂White: rare Mediterranean grapes: Vermentino, Fiano, Grenache Blanc, and Picpoul Blanc.

Bonus Tip: all 3 of these have lesser-seen whites, plus roses. So if the recent “heatwave” has you reaching for something crisp and aromatic, you’re in excellent hands.
Cheers to lush wines and osso-buco.
