Noteworthy Sonoma: 5 Standout Cabernets & Bordeaux Blends to Rival Napa (2026)
Five Alexander Valley and Healdsburg wineries, Aperture, Medlock Ames, Skipstone, Blue Rock, and Robert Young, crafting Cabs and Merlots worth the detour.
Turns out my earlier Cabernet post has been the crowd favorite so far—which is a little amusing to me, considering Sonoma is far more famous for other things (Pinot? Fog?). But it just proves the point: a well-made Cab still has a devoted fan club. So, who am I to keep you waiting? Here are five more standout Sonoma wineries crafting Cabernets that could go head-to-head with Napa’s best—only in settings that are, in my humble opinion, far more serene. And I do encourage you to try out the Merlots at these wineries. I know Merlot got canceled by Sideways long before “cancelling” was even a thing, but I assure you that the winemakers who persisted are definitely not fooling around, it is absolutely worth revisiting.

Aperture
I’ve written about Aperture before in my Sauvignon Blanc post but the real star of the show at Aperture (besides the art) is Cabernet Sauvignon. Aperture brings together world-class Bordeaux-style wines and sleek modern aesthetics in a way that feels more Left Bank-meets-design-museum than your typical Sonoma tasting room. Founded by winemaker Jesse Katz and his father, acclaimed photographer Andy Katz, the winery delivers an experience that’s as much about visual art as it is about polished, expressive wines.
The wines themselves are all about balance— California fruit shaped by Old World structure, natural acidity, and restraint. Jesse Katz keeps intervention to a minimum (no acid correction, no heavy-handed tricks), letting the cool-climate vineyard character speak for itself. The reds, especially the Cabernet-based blends, are powerful yet sculpted, with a depth and finesse that’s earned them genuine acclaim.
Tasting Experience
The sleek, art-filled lounge offers panoramic vineyard views and striking photography, setting the scene for a sophisticated, highly personalized tasting. If you’re after something fresh, modern, and a little glamorous, Aperture hits the mark.

Medlock Ames
Medlock Ames is a poster child for regenerative agriculture in Sonoma County, with 55 acres of vineyards, 800 olive trees, a market garden, and a wildlife corridor. From their stunning Bell Mountain Ranch, they blend environmental stewardship with seriously good Bordeaux-style winemaking. Their Cabernets and blends are deeply colored, structured, and complex, yet avoid drifting into the overly extracted, high-alcohol camp, thanks in part to the heavy clay loam soils that lend a refined edge. Regenerative Organic Certified, the estate integrates vineyards, gardens, and olive groves under a land-first philosophy—making it a haven for wine lovers who want their glass filled with both quality and conscience.
Tasting Experience
Choose between an intimate, guided tasting at the ranch—sometimes led by the owner or winemaker, complete with vineyard views and quirky options like pond fishing—or the more laid-back, historic tasting room in downtown Healdsburg, where summer Backyard Nights bring live music and local bites. Both settings are rich in character, but the ranch wins for its personal touch and undeniable connection to the land. (Fun fact: Sutro also hosts their tastings at the ranch.)

Skipstone
Skipstone Ranch is where luxury meets precision winemaking. This estate winery is famed for its Bordeaux-style wines, crafted under the watchful eye of Philippe Melka (who has an almost suspiciously long list of 100-point wines) and now Laura Jones. Their meticulously farmed organic vineyards and artisanal approach result in powerful yet polished wines, try the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon-based Oliver’s Blend and the Cabernet Franc/Merlot Faultline blend.
Tasting Experience
A work of beauty. Personalized tours, gourmet pairings, and light bites from their on-site garden make for an elevated experience. And oh, yes, views.

Blue Rock
Tucked away on a historic 100-acre estate with rolling hills and ancient olive groves, Blue Rock is the kind of hidden gem you almost want to keep to yourself. Over nearly four decades, the owners have lovingly restored the property’s stone buildings and created a relaxed, immersive (and extensive) tasting experience that comes with thoughtful food pairings. Blue Rock’s wines are all about balance and approachability, with a focus on Bordeaux-style blends, spanning from the very reasonable Baby Blue (at ~$30) to stunning "Best Barrels" bottles. Personally, I have a soft spot for their Merlot, but I seem to be in my Merlot era. If you love big, expressive wines, personal attention and century-old olive trees, Blue Rock can’t be beat.
Tasting Experience
Tastings are 1:1, relaxed and extensive, set on a picturesque estate with vineyard views, where a knowledgeable host guides you through a seated flight of reserve wines paired with small bites. For a truly special experience, you can opt for their private Vintner’s Table Lunch—an elevated, three-course meal crafted from local ingredients and thoughtfully matched to their wines, all enjoyed in a serene, private dining setting.
Other Essentials
Robert Young
Robert Young Estate quite literally put Cabernet on the map in Alexander Valley—they were the first to plant it back in 1963. Their wines hit that sweet spot between classic California richness and Bordeaux-inspired structure, especially in their Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux-style blends. Don’t overlook the Merlot (my personal favorite again… Merlot era?) or their surprisingly eclectic lineup of whites, which includes the rarely seen in California Melon de Bourgogne and Pinot Blanc.
Tasting Experience
Tastings here are hosted on a patio perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of Alexander Valley’s vineyards, in a relaxed but polished atmosphere. Guests can choose from a range of flights (including a white-only option), and the bites we had alongside the wines were especially well thought out.
