Best Sonoma Wineries for Fall Wine Tasting: 10 Picks for Autumn
10 Sonoma wineries to enjoy the changing seasons
Harvest is in, and the valley is humming with fermentations. If the pumpkin pile at my local Safeway is any indication, it’s officially fall. And whatever your stance on Halloween, or the annual pumpkin spice onslaught, there’s no denying that wine country is downright stunning this time of year. The vineyards are turning every shade of gold and crimson, and it’s peak leaf-peeping season (which I can’t say out loud without giggling, because, apparently, I’m still a child). So, in the spirit of fall foliage and full glasses, here are 10 gorgeous wineries where you can sip, swirl, and admire the changing seasons (and maybe giggle a little).
Halleck, Square Peg, Notre Vue, Bella, Coursey Graves. Plus, five recently mentioned standouts: Auteur, Iron Horse, Gary Farrell, Blue Rock and Robert Young.
Halleck
Halleck has been racking up accolades since the early 2000s, most famously, “Best Pinot Noir in America” back in 2002, and it hasn’t slowed down since. Today, this Sebastopol-based winery continues to turn out beautifully balanced, cool-climate Pinots alongside aromatic whites like Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer. The winemaking is minimal-intervention and precise, letting the coastal terroir do the talking. Expect elegant and nuanced, food friendly wines.
Tasting Experience
Tastings take place at the owners’ private home, often hosted by Ross or Jennifer Halleck themselves, in their vineyard garden overlooking the rolling hills of western Sonoma. You’ll sip through six wines paired with perfectly chosen locally sourced cheeses and chocolates. The drive in feels enchanted, the setting serene, and the overall mood—unhurried, genuine, and quietly spectacular.
Notable Varietals
🥂 White: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, White Zinfandel (Rose)
🍷 Red: Pinot Noir

Square Peg
Tucked into the cool, fog-kissed hills of Green Valley near Sebastopol, Square Peg is a small, family-run winery doing things the hard, and rewarding, way: 100% dry-farming their Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. The result? Wines with real depth, structure, and soul. Under the hand of veteran winemaker Bill Knuttel, the style leans Burgundian: elegant, medium-bodied Pinots with bright red fruit and earthy undertones, and a Zinfandel that proves the grape can be concentrated and serious yet beautifully balanced, (and not jammy).
Tasting Experience
The tasting room doubles as an art gallery, so you can sip wine and debate the parallels between the art and the wine worlds (a personal favorite topic of mine). Tastings are private and hosted by the owners or family members themselves. On sunny days, you can take your glass outside to the edge of the vines and soak in the view from their ridge-top perch, a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path kind of beauty that feels worlds away from the main tasting trail.

Notre Vue
Notre Vue in Windsor is a rare kind of wine estate, half luxury winery, half nature preserve. Of its 710 acres, more than half remain wildland, crisscrossed with lakes and trails that you can actually explore on foot or by bike (preferably before the tasting flight). Much of the fruit is sold to other wineries, the fruit they keep is used to make an unusually broad range of wines for Sonoma: you’ll find everything from elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to robust Bordeaux and Rhône blends, plus rarer varietals like Dolcetto and Sangiovese.
Tasting Experience
At Notre Vue, the tasting is as much about the setting as the wine. You can choose between the serene lakeside pavilion, where the soundtrack is just birds and breeze, or the elevated Block 23 Terrace, with sweeping panoramic views of the Russian River Valley. Both settings are relaxed, open-air, and blissfully unhurried. Expect Adirondack chairs, gentle music, and staff who treat you like old friends. Despite the grand vistas and refined wines, nothing here feels pretentious, the vibe is easygoing, the prices reasonable, and yes, both kids and dogs are enthusiastically welcomed.
Notable Varietals
🥂 White: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat
🍷 Red: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre

Bella
Bella is a family-run winery in Dry Creek Valley that has made a name for itself with old-vine Zinfandel and Rhône-style reds, many from century-old vines. The wines lean full-bodied and fruit-forward, with Zinfandels that balance rich berry flavors and spice, but there’s a range from bold and robust to more elegant, nuanced styles. Their small-lot, vineyard-designated bottlings capture the distinct character of Dry Creek’s hillside terroir, and the lineup extends across the Bella, Ten Acre, and Ru’s Farm labels.
Tasting Experience
Bella offers one of the most atmospheric tastings in Sonoma: you can sip underground in candlelit wine caves carved into the hillside, or head outside to a sunny lawn overlooking century-old vines. It’s all wonderfully laid-back. Picnic tables, live music on weekends, and staff who are as friendly as they are knowledgeable. Kids, dogs, and casual zin enthusiasts are all welcome, and there’s no pretense here, just genuine hospitality, beautiful views, and seriously good wine. (And the caves are especially fabulous on a 90-degree day, save this one for next summer, too!)

Coursey Graves
Perched high on Bennett Mountain, Coursey Graves is one of those rare places where the wines and the views are equally breathtaking. The estate is framed by Monet-worthy gardens and panoramic valley vistas, creating a setting that feels more Côte d’Or than California. Bordeaux-style reds and Northern Rhône-inspired Syrah with a distinctly French sensibility: balance over brawn, restraint over ripeness. The Cabernet blends are structured and elegant; the Syrah, savory and peppery, with that moody elegance that rewards patience (if you can resist opening it early). It’s a high-end, high-altitude experience in every sense.
Tasting Experience
Tastings at Coursey Graves are unhurried and quietly luxurious. Guests are welcomed to the hilltop estate for a guided stroll through vineyards and gardens before settling in for a seated flight, often outdoors on the terrace overlooking Bennett Valley. It is a thoughtful, unhurried exploration of wine in a beautiful, rural landscape.

Plus, here are five recently mentioned standouts: Auteur, Iron Horse, Gary Farrell, Blue Rock and Robert Young. All will be absolutely gorgeous stops, too.
Auteur
Auteur Wines is a boutique, family-run winery in the Russian River Valley, best known for its small-lot, terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Founded by Kenneth and Laura Juhasz, Auteur has spent the last 20 years quietly (and somewhat smugly) building a cult following for wines that are equal parts elegant and expressive. Think crisp, balanced Chardonnays and nuanced, Burgundian-style Pinots that politely sidestep the heavy-handed oak and sky-high alcohol that sometimes gatecrash California wine.
Tasting Experience
Auteur’s new Russian River hilltop estate tasting room is, frankly, stunning, panoramic views, relaxed energy, and believe it or not, kids and dogs are welcome (plus an option to have wines by the glass). Tastings are thoughtfully paired with artisan cheeses and fresh bread, a nod to Laura’s cheesemaking background, and the whole thing manages to be both memorable and unpretentious. The downtown Sonoma tasting salon offers an equally elegant but more quietly glamorous experience.

Iron Horse
Iron Horse is best known for its elegant, méthode champenoise sparkling wines, famously poured at the 1985 Reagan-Gorbachev Summit, and famous ever since. Founded by the Sterling family in 1976, it remains family-run today, with Audrey Sterling (now 95!) still living on the property. The sparkling lineup is crisp, nuanced, and well balanced, and tasting them side by side at different sweetness levels is an excellent way to zero in on what you really love in bubbles. Meanwhile, the estate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs showcase the cool-climate freshness of this corner of Sonoma. A big producer by my usual standards, yes, but this one really is a fun visit.
Tasting Experience
An al fresco bar perched atop a hill, overlooking 300 acres of rolling vine-covered hills with Mt. St. Helena in the distance. The vibe is relaxed, convivial, and a touch “old west,” more picnic table and patio than polished tasting salon. It’s mostly stand-up tastings, though you can reserve a table for a picnic (the best option, in my opinion). Either way, between the setting, the views, and the bubbles, Iron Horse makes for a delightful visit.

Gary Farrell
Dating back to 1982, Gary Farrell is an oldie but a goodie. Known for its elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the winery captures the essence of its terroir through small-lot, single-vineyard production. Recognized as a Top 100 Winery by Wine & Spirits magazine, it’s a classic for a reason.
Tasting Experience
A scenic tasting experience with a hilltop terrace offering breathtaking views of the valley. A beautiful (pun intended) way to explore the delicate diversity of Pinots. Definitely impressive enough for the in-laws, or a date you actually like.
Notable Varietals
🍷 Red: Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir, and (for variety) more Pinot Noir. Plus the occasional old-vine Zin.
🥂 White: Chardonnay, available in multiple vineyard designates and blends.

Blue Rock
Hidden on a historic 100-acre estate with rolling hills and ancient olive groves, Blue Rock is the kind of hidden gem you almost want to keep to yourself. Over nearly four decades, the owners have lovingly restored the property’s stone buildings and created a relaxed, immersive (and extensive) tasting experience that comes with thoughtful food pairings. Blue Rock’s wines are all about balance and approachability, with a focus on Bordeaux-style blends, spanning from the very reasonable Baby Blue (~$30) to the stunning “Best Barrels” bottles. Personally, I have a soft spot for their Merlot, but I seem to be in my Merlot era. If you love big, expressive wines, personal attention and century-old olive trees, Blue Rock can’t be beat.
Tasting Experience
Tastings are 1:1, relaxed and extensive, set on a picturesque estate with vineyard views, where a knowledgeable host guides you through a seated flight of reserve wines paired with small bites. For a truly special experience, you can opt for their private Vintner’s Table Lunch, an elevated, three-course meal crafted from local ingredients and thoughtfully matched to their wines, all enjoyed in a serene, private dining setting.

Robert Young
Robert Young Estate quite literally put Cabernet on the map in Alexander Valley, they were the first to plant it back in 1963. Their wines hit that sweet spot between classic California richness and Bordeaux-inspired structure, especially in their Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux-style blends. Don’t overlook the Merlot (my personal favorite again… Merlot era?) or their surprisingly eclectic lineup of whites, which includes the rarely seen in California Melon de Bourgogne and Pinot Blanc.
Tasting Experience
Tastings are hosted on a patio perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of Alexander Valley’s vineyards, in a relaxed but polished atmosphere. Guests can choose from a range of flights (including a white-only option), and the bites we had alongside the wines were especially well thought out.
Notable Varietals
